Late last week, VGVC attended Game ON: FINANCE, a one day conference organized by Interactive Ontario to bring together the game development and investor communities.

This was the first conference of it’s kind organized by Interactive Ontario, an industry trade organization chartered with helping the Ontario digital content industry. As a first-run conference, the results were acceptable, but not stellar. There was a fair turn out of attendees, and a good mix of game industry, financial community, and a number of people from various parts of the film & tv industry poking their heads into games to see what was up.

The content overall seemed well thought out initially, but seemed to suffer from a lack of oversight during preparation. The quality of panels and sessions varied widely one to the next, but there was still some good info to be extracted from all of them.

Recurring topics and themes throughout the day included:

  • How to get a startup funded in the face of growing dev budgets and publisher risk aversion.
  • “New” funding models (New to games anyway, there was a lot of discussion about the variety of models in more established industries like TV and Film.
  • Pursuing new, but less proven, markets like Facebook games, or go-for-broke with the big fish in the big ponds.
  • Tradeoffs between IP ownership, equity, etc.

Surprisingly little discussion about tax breaks and other government incentives given to game companies in Quebec and Ontario.

We’ll be posting detailed notes from each of the sessions over the next day or two, so be sure to check back.
